• To lead men to an acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

• To organize men into units and empower them to meet men’s needs in such areas as Evangelism and Stewardship.

• To teach the men of our denomination the history, doctrine and polity of our denomination with focus on the life, mission and ministry of our ancestral father, Richard Allen.

• To teach the men to witness their faith in daily living, such as in the workplace, the community, and the home.

• To encourage men to engage in outreach and service as a part of Christian servanthood.

• To seek resources and support of men as husbands and fathers.

• To empower men to serve as role models to young men and to develop youth ministries such as scouting ministries, in local units.

• To encourage men to promote unity among different Christian denominations and churches.

• The organization in the local church shall be known as a unit; in the presiding elder district, it shall be known as a Chapter; on the Annual Conference level, it shall be known as a Conference; and on the episcopal district level, it shall be known as a District.

o My church has a longstanding Men’s Fellowship group.  Isn’t that the same thing?

• Yes and no.  Per the AME Discipline: There shall be an organization called the Sons of Allen of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. This organization shall be answerable to the Commission of Christian Education of the AME Church.

• There is great value to the legacies of Men’s Fellowship groups.  The Sons of Allen is a ministry that is aligned with specific areas of focus (Commissions) and each unit should strive to minister within their community.

o What are the six Commissions?

1. Commission on Christian Fellowship

2. Commission on Christian Service

3. Commission on Christian Training

4. Commission on Devotional Life

5. Commission on Prison Ministry

6. Commission on Youth Ministry

o We are just starting out with Sons of Allen, do we have to address ALL of the six Commissions?

• In a word, No. Starting out use the six commissions to find out where the strengths, interests, and needs in your church community are and how can you start to meet those needs.  As you grow and mature, addressing more commissions can be done.
